Guerilla games has been pushing out some incredible titles lately. These developers keep showing consistency and craftmanship excellence.
Horizon Zero Dawn was a game that shook the RPG industry. It is really an unforgettable stamp in RPG history, and will remain that way. This is no surprise, since the game has been stunning in every way possible, from story to graphics.
On top of that, its gameplay was something unique, hence why most people fell in love with it. With the successor, Horizon Forbidden West on the way, many would like to dabble in some other RPG options as well.
We looked for games that will deserve to be mentioned that they’re like Horizon Forbidden West.

Genshin Impact might be the perfect choice for those who are looking for an experience similar to Horizon titles, but that is also online. So, you can enjoy this RPG co-op as well, with cross-play capabilities.
This game, like Horizon Forbidden West’s predecessor, shook the RPG industry. Not many were expecting for Genshin Impact to be as popular as it got. But all of the content in the game speaks for itself, and players took notice of that.
On top of that, it is a free game, with a bonkers amount of in-game content and availability on multiple platforms. There are a lot of unique mechanics that this game has, and has pioneered. Progression-wise, there is an endless amount to complete.
Some things are annoying though. For example, slow-paced gameplay and world travel might turn some players off, as well as the “pay-to-win” ability. Nevertheless, it remains a strong contender for the best 5 games like Horizon Forbidden West!
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
- Available on: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC
- Initial Release Date: May 18th, 2015
- Developed by: CD Projekt, CD Projekt RED
Even though CD Projekt Red has been under fire after the release of Cyberpunk 2077, there is no denying that these developers have given us some incredible games. Granted, Cyberpunk 2077 had a lot of issues, but they bit off more than they can chew.
Nevertheless, my point is, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was one of the greatest RPGs released in the last ten years. It remained game of the month for quite some time, and when you’re playing it, it is easy to see why that would be the case.
There is so much content to cover in Witcher 3, and even though there are some fundamental differences between it and Horizon Forbidden West, if you can ignore those, then this is a game that you should definitely experience.
Even if this list wasn’t for best games like Horizon Forbidden West, I would still recommend Witcher to anyone. It’s a bit older, but graphics and gameplay have aged well if I do say so myself. Witcher’s story is something you must experience.
Horizon Zero Dawn
- Available on: PlayStation 4, PC
- Initial Release Date: February 28th, 2017
- Developed by: Guerilla Games
It might be a tad bit crazy of me to suggest Horizon Zero Dawn, just because it is the predecessor for the game in question. But from what I’ve gathered, not many people that are interested in the successor have played the former.
If that is the case, even before playing Horizon Forbidden West, the last installment of it should be played, since most of the story is a continuation in the sequel. Why I suggested this game is because they’re similar, and no wonder, have a lot in common.
While graphics and gameplay are pretty close, the story is completely different. So, this game is for those that have played the sequel, and want to repeat the experience with something new.
Also, it is for those who haven’t played the sequel and want to experience it beforehand. You might expect that much has changed between the two, and that’s true to some extent, but these games are still only 3-4 years apart.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- Available on: Nintendo Switch, Wii U
- Initial Release Date: March 3rd, 2017
- Developed by: Nintendo Entertainment Planning & Development
Zelda games have always been classics. They also seem to have something going for them, to bring people of all ages and game preferences together. I can attest to this since that was exactly what happened at my home.
This game hits close to home for me, and no wonder, there are many aspects to this game that are favorable among people. There is a colossal drawback to Breath of the Wild though.
I hesitated quite a bit before including it into this best 5 games like Horizon Forbidden West list, and that’s only because of console availability. As you might know, Zelda games are Nintendo exclusives, which means that they can only be played on Nintendo consoles.
This is quite devastating for me and for those who are more of a PS or Xbox players. However, for those that enjoy their days spent on the Nintendo Switch, and are looking for games like Horizon Forbidden West, then look no more. Zelda is the way to go!
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
- Available on: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Linux, MacOS
- Initial Release Date: September 12th, 2018
- Developed by: Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montreal, Nixxes Software BV
Now, it’s no secret that Horizon games are usually more bonkers in nature. There are incredible creatures, monsters, powers, spells, and much more. Tomb Raider is more realistic, but there are quite a few things that these games have in common
Before I state what, those things are, it’s important to note that Rise of the Tomb Raider was considered and rated much better than Shadow of the Tomb Raider. However, Rise of the Tomb Raider graphics are a bit aged, so I chose the sequel.
If you aren’t aware of Tomb Raider’s narrative, it basically follows the life of Lara Croft. At times you’ll get a glimpse of this character multidimensional nature, and a lot of the times you will be faced with huge and unrealistic roadblocks.
The main objective is to overcome everything that is in front of you, hence why both games are similar. Graphics are quite different in both games, but while their style is different, they are both stunning to look at!
This list is by no means in any order, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a great choice from this best five games similar to Horizon Forbidden West.
